Sinatra and other male vocalists made this song into a kind of pointed put down of women, but in the original 1937 Broadway show, ‘Babes in Arms.’ The singer was hitchhiking to get a job and was singing this song in the first person, referring humorously to her own temporary situation caused by the Great Depression and escaping the stuffy mores of New York society. Lena’s version holds the original intention, that of an independent woman, and proud to be a ‘tramp,’ as in not being able to pay for transportation.
